Windows & Doors in The Ward

Windows and doors across St. Patrick's Ward, east of the Speed River, where the houses are older than most of the city and almost none of the openings are square.

The Ward is the part of Guelph where a tape measure matters most. The housing stock is largely pre-war brick and some limestone, built for the workers of the factories along the river and the rail line, and the window openings reflect that: tall and narrow, solid masonry reveals, sills that have settled, and widths that differ by half an inch from one side of the house to the other. Many houses still have some original wood sashes, and some have been through two or three rounds of replacement with units that never quite fit. The right approach is to measure every opening individually, decide window by window whether repair or replacement is the better answer, and specify frames, brick mould and sill detail that look as though they belong in the wall. Some Ward properties are designated under the Ontario Heritage Act or listed on the City's heritage register, and that status is checked against the address before anything is quoted, because a designated property needs a heritage permit before its windows are altered. New or enlarged openings, common when a rear addition goes on a Ward house, need a building permit from the City of Guelph.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover Puslinch and the townships, or just the city?

Both. The difference is administrative rather than practical: a property in Puslinch is under the Township of Puslinch for building permits, not the City of Guelph, so the permit question for a new or enlarged opening goes to the township office. The measuring, the units and the install are the same.

Do the heritage rules apply outside downtown?

Only to properties that are designated or inside the Brooklyn and College Hill district. A 1990s house in Kortright Hills or a 2005 house in Westminster Woods has no heritage status and the question does not arise. A century home in the Ward or near Exhibition Park may or may not be designated, and that is checked against the address before quoting.

Are the windows different for an older house?

The units are made to measure either way, but older openings are rarely square and the walls are solid brick or stone rather than framed, so the install is more careful and the trim and sill details matter more. The quote reflects that. On a newer house the openings are usually true and the job is faster.
